GCDS - the story so far

The Grand Canaria Desktop Summit has been incredible so far. The amount of talent and enthusiasm for Free Software has not only been amazing, but equally impressive and inspiring. The GNOME and KDE folks talking openly and discussing future plans - proving - that the so called "desktop flame war" is more or less completely gone. I really look forward to the hacking these coming days - hopefully implementing a few of the things that have been discussed this weekend myself. Also, worth mentioning is the amazing job that Nokia did with the sponsorship. The conference location is top notch - the events great - and the swag is all very useful. Good job!

And now, we have the obligatory photos...

They're all so committed to efficiency, they've even shaved off their hair to eliminate drag! :)

Can you please change this blog date so it's the correct one and so your blog does not stay on top of PlanetKDE please? Thanks in advance!

Sorry about that! Fixed.

I'm really glad that it's going well. It's important to foster communication and good relations between KDE and Gnome (as well as other environments).

As for the desktop flame war -- well, I've always maintained that it was largely the users of the DE's, not the developers, that were propagating negative feelings and attitudes in online communities (especially forums). And that's still happening fairly often.

Even 3 or 4 years ago, I don't recall that many instances of developers from either camp being unreasonably hostile or defamatory. It was just more that they didn't interact or cooperate on projects very often.

Hurray for greater cooperation in the future, though. Looking forward to it.
